Duration: 15’
PROGRAMME NOTE
Studies on Aotearoa’s Moana is a multimedia, multichannel sonic artwork which explores different interpretations of the moana through the use of found sound, acoustic music, audio synthesis, and visual art. Walking into the space, audience members are welcomed by three paintings representing different sensations associated with the moana: Peace, anger, and mystique. Zooming in on one case study, the eight different speakers are interspersed with different representations of Tāmaki Makaurau’s own Waitematā Harbour. The audience is invited to explore these sounds spatially, walking around the paintings and the speakers to fully immerse themselves in the sounds of the Waitematā Harbour and our moana at large. This installation invites audience members to question their own associations with the moana; Where do they come from? Who has influenced them? What do they look like without different external input?
